Gut health is a pretty hot topic in the health world, and there is a ton of content about gut health on social media. However, not everything you’re seeing online is accurate, and some “healthy” tips online could actually be hurting you! In this episode, Dr. L - the MD and gastroenterology fellow behind @socalgastrodoc on TikTok - is helping us unpack the misinformation online and teach us how to actually take care of our gut.

  • The best evidence we have for probiotics working is for people with very specific GI conditions. There is promising evidence that our gut microbiomes affect weight loss, IBS, and other common issues, but there’s no evidence that taking a probiotic will fix that.

  • Specific foods do not necessarily cause GI distress. If you find yourself heavily restricting your diet to avoid symptoms, see a GI specialist. Sometimes just the act of eating can be causing symptoms, and there are medications that can help with that!

  • It’s time to see a GI doctor if you’re ever experiencing blood in your stool, or if symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, bloating, or eating are interfering with your quality of life. There’s no need to suffer or try to treat these things on your own.
