How to Work Out Without Equipment

Written by Margaret (Maggie) Prosser, BS, CPT

You've worked hard, stayed disciplined, and achieved progress in your weight loss, but then the much-anticipated vacation rolls around. The temptation of indulgent foods, relaxed routines, and a break from the gym can be daunting. Vacations are meant to be enjoyed, yet it's entirely possible to strike a balance between indulgence and healthy habits, ensuring that your vacation doesn't sabotage your hard-earned progress.

What exercises can I do in a hotel room or hotel gym with minimal equipment?

You don’t need equipment to move your body or make your workout “count.” Any movement will help you burn calories.

1. Body weight exercises are an easy way to fit in some of your normal routine into your vacation. Try squats or jump squats, pushups, bicycle ab crunches, walking or in-place lunges, planks, burpees, mountain climbers, or others listed here. Search around on YouTube to find specific workout routines. I personally like @growingannanas and @MadFit on YouTube.

2. Go for a walk around the city you are visiting or spend 20 minutes walking on the treadmill.  Bring a friend to make it more fun!

3. Original Tabata workouts are 8 intervals of 20 seconds of hard, all-out work with 10 second rests in between, equaling 4 minutes. Tabata training is an easy, quick way to get your heart rate up while traveling.

4. Opt to walk to your destination instead of driving or Ubering.

5. Pack your running shoes! Wake up 20 minutes earlier and seize the day! Going on a run can be a fun way to see new parts of the city you are in. Bring a friend to make it more fun!

6. Dancing! Dancing is my favorite way to get movement in. Dance around the room while getting ready for your night out. Afternoon slump? Play Just Dance from YouTube. I promise you will be sweating by the time the song is over. Stay tuned for a blog post about the benefits of dance on mental health!

Final Thoughts

Vacation is supposed to be relaxing. If you find it difficult to do any workouts while on break, try your best to hit your step goal. Staying on track with at least your step goals will help you feel accomplished.
