Food Court Frenzy: How to Navigate Corporate Dining for Weight Loss

Written by Hannah Abdulla

Navigating a corporate food court can be an overwhelming experience. With so many options and people, it can be challenging to make a quick and healthy decision. They are usually jam-packed with people, loud, and have more food options than you probably know what to do with. Check out some of the tips below for navigating food courts.

Check out All the Restaurants

Food courts can be overwhelming due to the surplus of options. We recommend taking a step back from the chaos and scoping out all the options prior to making a decision. Take a walk from one end of the food court to the other, skimming menus as you go. You have the potential to meet all your goals at this meal if you keep MyPlate in mind while looking around. Remember- find your protein and your produce, the rest will fall into place.

Take Advantage of To-Go Containers

If you eat out pretty much anywhere you know the portion sizes are often large. Thankfully, most food courts package their foods in to-go containers. This will allow you to take some of your food home with you and you won’t feel pressured to finish it all. Remember to eat slowly while listening to your hunger and fullness cues. When you begin to feel you have had enough to eat you can pack up your leftovers and enjoy them for another meal.

Scope out a Salad Spot

Many food courts now have salad chains like Chopt, Saladworks and Sweetgreen. These are great spots to get a well-rounded meal and you have the opportunity to meet your produce and protein goal at these spots. The base of most of these restaurants' menu items are a large portion of vegetables. From there you can pick from a variety of proteins like chicken, tofu, beans, boiled eggs and more.

Look for a Familiar Spot

Most often corporate food courts are filled with chain restaurants, which means you may already be familiar with menus. If you have a go-to at a chain spot, see if you can find that spot at the food court. Already knowing what you enjoy eating will help alleviate the pressure of navigating a food court.

Next time you find yourself at a corporate food court, remember these tips to help you make the most of your meal. With a little bit of planning and a willingness to explore, you can enjoy a healthy and delicious meal at any food court.
