What to do When You’ve Gotten Off Track
By Hannah Abdulla RD
The holiday season is a stressful time of year for many of our clients. While our practice is to teach people how to fit treats into their diet in a mindful way, it gets overwhelming with back to back parties, events and celebrations. The holiday season lasts for a few months and throughout that time if you ever feel off track, refer to our tips below.
Remember MyPlate
If you are or have been a client at TMN you have learned about MyPlate. If you are a newbie you can find MyPlate resources here. MyPlate is a healthy eating guide created by the United States Department of Agriculture with the version below being an adaptation from Harvard School of Medicine. Whether you are navigating an overwhelming amount of food or are trying to get back on track, this is a great tool. Even if you feel you have gotten off track it is important to nourish, not deprive, your body. Save this image and use it as a reminder of the ways your body needs to be nourished regardless of what you ate the day prior.
Produce & Protein
While navigating the holiday season, always think- “where is my produce?” and “where is my protein?” There is no shortage of starches and grains in a Western diet and we promise they will fall into place. Remembering your produce and protein goals is a great way to feel like you are getting back towards your overall health goals. Produce will quickly get healthy digestion where it needs to be, while protein will help keep you full.
Be Kind to Yourself
You will not derail your progress because you ate dessert a few extra days than you normally do. You will not derail your progress because you ate over calories a few days. You will not derail your progress because you missed the gym last week. What will derail your progress is giving up on yourself. Remind yourself- I have the tools to do this, my coach has taught me how to handle these moments, now I need to put it all to action and begin nourishing myself in a mindful way. You’ve got this!
