Read MoreFor those who don’t know I am so inspired by Martha Stewart (probably more of her brand than actually the person). I just am amazed with how she created her own brand during a time without social media and also started out working on Wall Street! I still love her magazine with all of the practical tips for cooking, gardening, and cleaning. I like that her brand isn’t too healthy and more so focuses on being happy with your hobbies and hand-made goods. I conducted a deep-dive for how she was so successful and became even more amazed by her business. This is what we can learn form her to create your own personal brand
Read MoreThe new year is the worst time of the year for diet culture. Something about a fresh start inspires people to start bashing their bodies and restricting what they eat. Dieting may not always be healthy, and may actually contribute to decreased mental health. If you want to start a diet in the new year ask yourself, “Why do I want to start a diet? Do I want to be healthier or do I just want to lose weight?”
Read MoreIf you didn’t already know, I’m actually not that big of a fan of holidays. I used to get super stressed out about making everything perfect from the decorations to seeing every family member to buying the presents- and I’m just done with being so obsessed with it. I could go on and on about this, but the point is that I’m also not a fan of making New Years Resolutions. I have learned that I am so self-disciplined that this quality actually works against me by making myself miserable to complete the goal that I made for myself without actually asking if I’m happy- which is the point of making the goal anyway, right? Things happen in life and get in the way of your goals and I’m trying to work on accepting these hiccups instead of seeing them as roadblocks for my goals.

Travel lays the table for the feast you enjoy sitting still back at hoe. Stillness is the end point of any trip; it’s the way you convert sights into insights and bring the experience home.” Pico Lyer
Read MoreI keep hearing about this concept called “Health at every Size” (HAES) and intuitive eating, and it sounds great to me! Just the sound of the words are so comforting when I feel like all that I’ve learned in nutrition is eating less or calorie counting or cutting out fat, etc. But what exactly is HAES and intuitive eating? Is it something that I could use as a future RD and is it something that I can use in my daily life? I dug into the research to find out:
Read More1. The street food is okay! ... kinda. Mexican street food is the heart of Mexican food and definitely should be tried. However, try to find places that already have lines meaning that they have a good reputation of not getting people sick. Don't just go up to any street vendor and try it. Do your research! We found this place on Bon Appetite's "Best places to eat in Mexico City." It is a tostadas vendor at a market in Coyoacan. This was proabaly one of my favorite places and they also have awesome juice! Try the alfalfa!!
Read MoreIf you don’t already know, FNCE is the Food Nutrition Conference and Expo for members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and it is THE BEST EVENT EVER. Well if you like food and nutrition it is. There are tons and tons of interesting lectures and endless food samples from top food brands like Siggi’s, Kellogg’s, Kind Bar and much more. But here are the real reasons you shouldn’t miss FNCE in the future.
Read MoreI hate this question, and I bet if you ask other dietitians they would feel the same way. But I feel that I should answer this question the best way I can since everyone wants to know and always asks me this. This is such a hard question, because there is no hard evidence that there is one correct way to eat for everyone. If there was- you would be able to just go to the store and buy a pack of nutrients for the week and be done with it. But it’s just not that simple because every one is so different. However, there is a generally agreed upon pattern of eating that I can speak to. So let’s dive in and I’ll try to not make this excruciatingly long and boring.
Read MoreI keep seeing so many blog entries about “Tips to be Healthy at Thanksgiving,” and I just hate the pressure of this holiday being swept into diet culture. I was actually tasked at my internship to talk about this very subject and I found myself starting to make handouts with the nutrition info for each common food item, listing tips for how to be healthy on that day, and developing healthy recipe swaps for this day to hand out. After I kept researching this topic I starting asking myself “does one day really matter in the grand scheme of things? What should I really be trying educate about for this day?” I started digging and found that Americans, on average, only gain 1 lb by the end of the holiday season, so should we really be worried about this? Yes and no…
Read MoreDon’t you love how food has to do with everything? From politics, to art, even sustainability! My internship site is trying to become more sustainable so they wanted me to put together a demo for sustainable eating, and I actually learned a lot! I always try to look it these topics from a cynical perspective, because (unfortunately) my audience will too. People love to contradict nutrition, so I try to be prepared. So why does eating more sustainable really matter? Here’s my analysis:
