How to Eat Flexible for Weight Loss at an AirBnB This Summer
Written by Sarah Hester, MS, RD
Don’t let traveling throw you completely off your balanced eating game this summer. Here are some tips to make healthy choices at your next rental stay a little easier!
Consider Grocery Delivery Services
If you don’t have time or transportation to go to a grocery store and still want some healthy kitchen staples, consider scheduling a grocery order to be delivered to your rental. Pre-packaged and pre-cut products are your friends! Think cut fruit, veggie trays, bags of nuts, dips like hummus or tzatziki and yogurt cups.
Plan To Cook
If not cooking a meal, plan to at least cobble together snacks. Ask your group if they’d like a home-cooked meal, you’d be surprised when they agree that they’d rather save some $ and not eat out. Rentals like AirBnB are usually stocked with the basics like salt, pepper, oil, some utensils and a baking dish or two. Don’t assume any specialty spices or gadgets will be stocked. You can always message your rental host to confirm what basics are available and what you may have to bring or buy. Keep meals simple and plan to use as minimal of utensils as possible. Pasta with canned sauce and precooked proteins, sheet pan meals using pre-cut vegetables, salads and even sandwiches are easy options. Or, try out a meal delivery service and have it delivered to your rental or bring it along with you. Check out our review of meal delivery services here!
Be Flexible
Plans change on vacation. Someone in the group may come down sick or your reservation gets canceled.
Don’t Get Hangry
Going to a restaurant hangry can lead to overeating and indulging. Consider a snack and water before a meal to stave off hanger.
Prioritize Hydration
Plan to purchase water and hydrating beverages along with any other liquids you plan to buy. In the chance the tap water is not to your liking and there is no filter, you’re covered with bottled water.
Bottom Line
Most importantly, enjoy yourself! Weight gain or weight loss is not determined by a few day’s worth of indulgence or balance, it is an accumulation of choices and habits over time. Whether you’re traveling to Nevada, New York, Nashville, San Fransisco, or Raleigh remember to always have fun.
